Abstract

Understanding Hegelianism explores the ways in which Hegelian and anti-Hegelian currents of thought have shaped some of the most significant movements in twentieth-century European philosophy, particularly the traditions of critical theory, existentialism, Marxism and poststructuralism. The first part of the book examines Kierkegaard’s existentialism and Marx’s materialism, which present two defining poles of subsequent Hegelian and anti-Hegelian movements. The second part looks at the contrasting critiques of Hegel by Lukacs and Heidegger, which set the stage for the appropriation of Hegelian themes in German critical theory and the anti-Hegelian turn in French poststructuralism. The role of Hegelian themes in the work of Adorno, Habermas and Honneth are explored. In the third part, the rich tradition of Hegelianism in modern French philosophy is considered – the work of Wahl, Kojeve, Hyppolite, Lefebvre, Sartre, de Beauvoir as well as the radical critique of Hegelianism articulated by Derrida and Deleuze. Although the focus is primarily on German and French appropriations of Hegelian thought, the author also explores some of the recent developments in Anglophone Hegelianism.

Abstract

This 2007 book examines the possibilities for the rehabilitation of Hegelian thought within analytic philosophy. From its inception, the analytic tradition has in general accepted Bertrand Russell's hostile dismissal of the idealists, based on the claim that their metaphysical views were irretrievably corrupted by the faulty logic that informed them. These assumptions are challenged by the work of such analytic philosophers as John McDowell and Robert Brandom, who, while contributing to core areas of the analytic movement, nevertheless have found in Hegel sophisticated ideas that are able to address problems which still haunt the analytic tradition after a hundred years. Paul Redding traces the consequences of the displacement of the logic presupposed by Kant and Hegel by modern post-Fregean logic, and examines the developments within twentieth-century analytic philosophy which have made possible an analytic re-engagement with a previously dismissed philosophical tradition.

Abstract

In October 1842, the young Russian émigré Mikhail Bakunin published “Reaction In Germany” in Arnold Ruge’s German Annals. This brilliant and brash contribution to the debates of the Hegelian Left uses Hegel’s Logic as a logic of conflict which excludes all forms of external mediation between the opposing parties of Reaction and Revolution. Several months later, the article “Communism” marked Bakunin’s complete break with the philosophy. Written as last-ditch philosophical attempts to formulate a departure from the philosophy which now came across as an abandonment of theory for practice, his two letters to Arnold Ruge in 1843 explained what distanced Bakunin from German philosophy, including the Hegelian Left of which he had recently been a member. These texts are published in their entirety for the first time and in a translation which justifies their inclusion in the Young Hegelian tradition. With their accompanying commentary, they shed new light on the Young Hegelian School. Additionally, they offer a radical vision of conflictuality and the philosophical basis for a revolutionary stance. Finally, they provide a valuable record of the early intellectual and political journey of a revolutionary who was to shape his century.
